Hair Consultation Translations: What You Say vs. What We Hear

An honest (but loving) guide from behind the chair

There’s a very special moment that happens in every hair consultation. You sit down, we spin you toward the mirror, and suddenly… we’re speaking two completely different languages.

You’re saying one thing.
We’re hearing another.

Not because anyone’s wrong just because “hair language” is a thing. And if we don’t translate it properly, that’s how we end up with “this isn’t what I meant” energy.

So consider this your unofficial decoder. A little humor, a little truth, and a lot of clarity.

“I just want a trim”

What you mean: Take off the bare minimum, please don’t change anything
What we hear: You want to keep your length, but your ends are… holding on for dear life

Translation: We will absolutely respect your length. But if your ends are see through, split, and whispering for help, we might recommend a little more than you had in mind. Not to be dramatic but healthy hair hits different.

“I want to be blonde, but low maintenance”

What you mean: Effortless, lived in, cool girl blonde
What we hear: Blonde… without the upkeep, toner fades, or financial commitment

Translation: We can get you close and we love a lived in blonde, but blonde is not a one time personality trait. It’s a relationship. There will be toners. There will be appointments. There will be purple shampoo.

“I want something natural”

What you mean: Soft, subtle, nothing too bold
What we hear: You don’t want to look like you just left the salon

Translation: “Natural” means something different to everyone. For some, it’s sun kissed. For others, it’s full dimension but blended. This is where photos save lives because your version of natural might not match ours.

“I don’t want it too short”

What you mean: Please don’t shock me
What we hear: You’re open to change… but only emotionally, not physically

Translation: Totally fair. We’ll walk you through every inch before we cut it. But if you’re asking for shape, movement, or a full refresh, some length might need to go. Growth is scary. So are dead ends.

“I want layers, but not layers”

What you mean: Movement without losing fullness
What we hear: Invisible magic

Translation: You’re looking for softness. Face framing, internal movement, something that feels layered without looking choppy. This is actually a real thing, we just need to define how subtle you want it.

“I use good products”

What you mean: I’m trying
What we hear: There’s a bottle of professional shampoo in the shower… somewhere

Translation: No judgment. But products matter more than people think. Your at home routine is 50 percent of your result. If the hair isn’t holding tone, shine, or style, this is usually where we troubleshoot first.

“It looked different in this picture”

(Shows a Pinterest photo)
What you mean: I want this exact vibe
What we hear: Different lighting, different hair type, different starting point, possibly different universe

Translation: We love inspo photos. But they’re just that inspiration. We’ll break down what you actually like about it tone, brightness, placement, shape and tailor it to your hair, not copy paste it.

“I wash my hair like… once a week”

What you mean: Low maintenance queen
What we hear: Dry shampoo is doing the heavy lifting

Translation: This can work depending on your hair and scalp. But if we’re dealing with buildup, dullness, or color not lasting, this might be part of the equation. Balance is everything.

“Do whatever you think”

What you mean: I trust you
What we hear: This is either going to be the best day ever… or a personality test

Translation: We love the trust. Truly. But give us something. A direction, a feeling, a definitely not this. Freedom is great, but a little guidance helps us nail it.

So what actually makes a consultation work?

It’s not about saying the right thing it’s about clarity.

The best consultations happen when we
Talk through your lifestyle not just your inspo
Get honest about maintenance time, budget, commitment
Use photos as a guide, not a guarantee
And leave space for us to translate everything into something that actually works for your hair

Because at the end of the day, we’re not just doing your hair we’re building a plan.

Final thoughts from behind the chair

We’re on the same team. Always.

Our job isn’t to tell you no it’s to tell you what’s realistic, what’s going to last, and what’s going to make you feel like the best version of yourself after you leave, not just in the chair.

So say what you mean. Show us what you like. Ask questions.

And if all else fails… we’ll translate 😉
