HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR HAND TIED EXTENSIONS

So you got hand-tied extensions. You’re obsessed. Everyone keeps asking what you’re doing differently. Life is good.

Now let’s keep it that way.

Because the truth is—extensions aren’t high maintenance… but they are high standard. Treat them right and they’ll stay soft, seamless, and borderline unfair. Neglect them and… we’re not going there.

Here’s how to actually take care of them.

brush your hair (yes, every day)

I know. Groundbreaking.

But truly—this is the difference between effortless, flowing hair and “why is there a knot the size of a golf ball back here?”

Brush 1–2 times a day, and always support your rows with your hand so you’re not pulling at the scalp. Start from the ends and work your way up like a civilized person.

wash smart, not aggressive

You don’t need to wash your hair every day. In fact, please don’t.

2–3 times a week is perfect.

Before you shower, brush your hair (again—important). In the shower:

  • shampoo your scalp, not your entire life story

  • let the shampoo run through the ends

  • condition mid-lengths to ends (not directly on the rows)

Your extensions are not the place to take out your stress.

dry your hair like you care about it

Going to bed with wet extensions is… bold. Not in a good way.

Wet rows = tangling + matting + regret.

After washing:

  • gently squeeze out water (no aggressive towel turban moments)

  • use heat protectant

  • fully dry the weft area

If the top is dry and the rows are still damp, you’re not done.

sleep like a low-maintenance queen

Before bed, throw your hair into a loose braid or low pony.

This prevents tangling and keeps everything smooth while you sleep. Bonus points for a silk pillowcase—it’s not required, but it does make you feel like you have your life together.

be picky with products

Not all products are extension-friendly. Some are… a little too moisturizing in the wrong places.

Stick with:

  • sulfate-free shampoo

  • lightweight conditioner

  • leave-in or oil on the ends only

Avoid heavy oils near the scalp unless you want your extensions slowly sliding into a new life without you.

keep your appointments (this is not optional)

Hand-tied extensions need to be moved up every 6–8 weeks.

This keeps everything:

  • secure

  • comfortable

  • blended

Skipping your maintenance appointment is like skipping oil changes in your car and hoping for the best. You can do it… but should you?

how long they last (aka how well you behave)

With proper care, your hair can last 6–12 months.

If you’re gentle, consistent, and not doing anything chaotic—closer to the 12-month mark.

If not… we’ll just say your stylist will know.

final thoughts

Extensions are meant to make your life easier, not harder. Once you get into a routine, it becomes second nature.

Take care of them, and they’ll take care of you.

Effortless, seamless, “no this is actually my real hair” kind of energy.

And if you ever feel unsure about anything—just ask us. We’d rather you ask than experiment.

Trust.
